Dowina in Gitarre&Bass magazine

German magazine Gittare&Bass reviewed one of our best instruments

It is always a pleasant surprise for us when a big music magazine writes about Dowina and even more when it provides its readers with positive feedback.

English translation:

White Wine from Slovakia

Dowina Chardonay DCE-S

A fresh wind is blowing through the German acoustic guitar market originating from Dowina, a company based near Bratislava.Dowina began in 1979 with the production of violins and put the experience gained immediately into the construction of guitars. The top of the Vintage series instruments are divided into three lines, which are named after Classic wines. Today, we have a Chardonnay-model for the tasting.

Construction

The name addition of DCE-S stands for dreadnought cutaway, electric, spruce. The latter describes acoustic material of the top which is an element of the guitar to which the greatest importance is attached at Dowina. In the search for the perfect top wood – light weight, best vibration behavior, great stability and tonal potential, the answer came from the Val di Fieme in Dolomites. Here was where none other than Antonio Stradivari and other famous luthiers already searched for perfect tone woods. Dolomites – Solid spruce is applied for the top. Mahogany is used for the two-part solid back and solid sides. The bindings of figured Maple, and the Rosette design especially ensure the unique, stylish  European ethnic-themed appearance of Dowina – very consistent. Strings are fixed with tasteful wood-pins of Rosewood.  A bridge of rosewood  fits to the perfectly polished saddle made of Buffalo bone. Length from the nut to the saddle runs 645 mm. The mahogany neck has a rosewood fingerboard with 20 perfectly crafted frets and rhomboid-shaped mother-of pearl inlays. The elegant headplate with a bright inlay and a dark rosewood layer is equipped with closed Grover tuners. For electrical amplification an L.R.Baggs Pro stage element system is included. The entire instrument has received a matte finish through application of linseed oil. The top is protected by an almost invisible transparent pickguard, without visual interference. The crafting and finishing can be described as remarkable. A good case is included.

Practice

The Dowina plays as if you have had this guitar forever. It sounds like a favorite guitar which has been played in for many years. Great sound. So rough, dry, Woody – very expressive. It offers its own sound making it simply refreshing to play a guitar. Resonating freely & deeply the artists personal emotional interpretation is transformed accurately into musical language. The Dowina is so much fun, it’s inspiring! The playability is easy, so much so that you almost forget to mention it.The L.R.Baggs translates very accurately in the electrical. The tone control (treble, mid, bass) work extremely well. Only rarely does one find a middle setting that brings such great sounds above the center position.

Summary

Very highly recommended for a personal test.I hope the Dowina instruments from Bratislava will receive the attention which they definitely deserve. Great craft – great sound – for guitarists who have a mind of their own.
